DENOTA UNA ACCIÓN QUE SE EJECUTÓ O SE REALIZÓ EN UN MOMENTO DADO. EN INGLÉS, AL IGUAL QUE EN ESPAÑOL, SE RECONOCE QUE UNA ORACIÓN ESTÁ ESCRITA EN TIEMPO PASADO PORQUE EL VERBO PRINCIPAL SE ENCUENTRA, CLARO ESTÁ, EN TIEMPO PASADO.

SI EN UNA ORACIÓN SIMPLE(porque contiene un solo verbo) EL VERBO TO BE ES EL VERBO PRINCIPAL EN SUS FORMAS WAS/WERE; ENTONCES WAS o WERE SERÁ EL AUXILIAR. SI POR EL CONTRARIO ES OTRO EL VERBO PRINCIPAL TAL COMO: PLAYED – WENT – WROTE – STUDIED, etc ENTONCES EL AUXILIAR SERÁ “DID”. ESTE AUXILIAR SE ENCUENTRA EN ORACIONES INTERROGATIVAS, AFIRMATIVAS CORTAS, NEGATIVAS CORTAS Y LARGAS. EL PROCEDIMIENTO A SEGUIR, CUANDO EL VERBO PRINCIPAL ES WAS o WERE, ES EL MISMO QUE CON EL PRESENTE SIMPLE: AM – IS – ARE.

AQUÍ UN EJEMPLO:  SHE WAS AT HOME YESTERDAY.(declarative sentence)

WAS SHE AT HOME YESTERDAY? (interrogative sentence)

YES, SHE WAS. (affirmative short answer)

YES, SHE WAS AT HOME YESTERDAY. (affirmative complete answer)

NO, SHE WASN’T. (negative short answer)

NO, SHE WASN’T AT HOME YESTERDAY. (negative complete answer)

AHORA UN EJEMPLO PERO EMPLEANDO CUALQUIER OTRO VERBO EN TIEMPO PASADO. LES DIJE ANTERIORMENTE QUE EL AUXILIAR ES “DID”

EXAMPLE: THEY STUDIED ENGLISH LAST WEEK. (declarative sentence)

DID THEY STUDY ENGLISH LAST WEEK? (interrogative sentence)

YES, THEY DID. (affirmative short answer)

YES, THEY STUDIED ENGLISH LAST WEEK. (affirmative complete answer)

NO, THEY DIDN’T. (negative short answer)

NO, THEY DIDN’T STUDY ENGLISH LAST WEEK. (negative complete answer)

RECUERDEN LO QUE LES DIJE ANTERIORMENTE; QUE EN LA ÚNICA ORACION DONDE NO SE ENCUENTRA EL AUXILIAR “DID” ES EN LA ORACIÓN AFIRMATIVA COMPLETA o LARGA. POR CONSIGUIENTE, EL VERBO SE ESCRIBIRÁ EN “PASADO”. FÍJENSE QUE EN LAS ORACIONES DONDE ESTÁ ESTE AUXILIAR “DID” EL VERBO SE ESCRIBE EN PRESENTE. VEAMOS OTRO EJEMPLO:

JOHN LIVED IN CARACAS LAST YEAR.

DID JOHN LIVE IN CARACAS LAST YEAR?

YES, HE DID.

YES, HE LIVED IN CARACAS LAST YEAR.

NO, HE DIDN’T.

NO, HE DIDN’T LIVE IN CARACAS LAST YEAR.

AHORA PREGUNTAS CON WH—CON SUS RESPUESTAS.

OBJECTIVE # 2         PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE OR PROGRESSIVE.

Denota una accion que se ESTABA ejecutando, una accion que estaba pasando, algo que estaba sucediendo. En una oracion en PASADO CONTINUO o PROGRESIVO, encontraremos el verbo ESTAR [BE] en tiempo pasado [WAS WERE] y el verbo de accion o verbo principal en GERUNDIO, es decir, con la terminacion ING.No deben olvidar que a cada forma del verbo BE en pasado [WAS WERE] le corresponde un pronombre personal. I, HE, SHE, IT [WAS] YOU WE THEY [WERE]. He aqui el esquema de una oracion en pasado continuo o pasado progresivo.

SUJETO + WAS WERE + VERBO PPAL EN GERUNDIO + COMPLEMENTO.

Ejemplo: THEY WERE PLAYING BASEBALL YESTERDAY.  El verbo to be WAS o WERE seria el auxiliar de la oracion. Detallando esta oracion: They es el sujeto. Were el auxiliar. Play el verbo principal. Playing el gerundio, y el complemento baseball yesterday.

para hacer una oracion interrogativa [Yes No answer], a partir de una oracion declarativa, se procede de la siguiente manera:

Example: TONY WAS RESTING AT HOME. [declarative sentence]

WAS TONY RESTING AT HOME? [interrogative sentence]

YES, HE WAS. [affirmative short answer]

YES, HE WAS RESTING AT HOME. [affirmative complete answer]

NO, HE WASNT. [negative short answer]

NO, HE WASNT RESTING AT HOME. [negative complete answer]

Objetivo # 1.   PRESENT CONTINUOUS OR PROGRESSIVE.

                                                       GUIDE # 1

El tiempo presente continuo o progresivo denota una acción que se esta ejecutando, una acción que esta pasando, algo que esta sucediendo.En una oración en presente continuo hallaremos el verbo ESTAR (BE) en tiempo PRESENTE (AM - IS - ARE) y el verbo de acción o verbo principal, tiene que estar escrito en GERUNDIO; es decir con la terminación -ING. Si no lo sabias, los verbos en gerundio se traducen al Español con la terminación ---ANDO, ---ENDO. Por ejemplo: TO PLAY (jugar)...PLAYING (jugando). TO GO (ir)... GOING (yendo). TO READ (leer)...READING (leyendo). No deben olvidar que a cada forma del verbo BE en PRESENTE (AM- IS - ARE), le corresponde un pronombre personal respectivo... I (am)... YOU- WE - THEY (are)... HE - SHE - IT (is). Aquí el esquema de una oracion en pte continuo o progresivo: Sujeto+ (am-is-are) + Verbo (gerundio)+Complemento. Ejemplo: I am explaining the new class. El verbo to be (am-is-are) sería el auxiliar de la oración. Detallando esta oración: I es el sujeto. Am el auxiliar. Explain es el verbo principal. Explaining el gerundio de ese verbo principal y The new class es el complemento de la oración. Para formar una oración interrogativa (YES-NO answer), a partir de una oracion declarativa, se procede de la siguiente manera:

* ADA IS EATING FRESH FRUITS.   (Declarative sentence)

Is Ada eating fresh fruits?   (Interrogative sentence)

Yes, she is.           (Affirmative short answer)

Yes, she is eating fresh fruits,          (Affirmative long answer)

No, she isn't.         (Negative short answer)

No, she isn't eating fresh fruits,     (Negative long answer)

He aquí otros ejemplos de oraciones interrogativas, pero empleando la forma WH--- con sus posibles respuestas.

* Who is studying math?

Mary is studying math

* What are they doing?

They are watching television

* Where is Rose studying?

She is studying at the library

* What is Mrs Gomez doing?

She is preparing the breakfast
